Fascinating Facts On The History Of Thanksgiving And Deciding To #OptOutside

A family enjoys a walk in a park. Many people are choosing to #OptOutside on the day after Thanksgiving

If you go to the National Park Foundation website, you can find some interesting facts about Thanksgiving, including portions of Abraham Lincoln's letter proclaiming the holiday.

There's a fascinating story behind the history of this popular holiday.

For one, all Americans might not be celebrating this same day off every November if it weren't for a woman named Susan Josepha Hale.

This tune was written by one of the most popular songwriters of all time - Jimmy Webb. He also penned such monster hits as "I Am a Lineman for the County" and "Up, Up and Away."

Here's another interesting tidbit: MacArthur Park really does exist. This famous patch of land is located in Los Angeles, CA.

Webb said he got the idea for the song after he broke up with his girlfriend. When they were together, they would meet in MacArthur Park for lunch and those fond memories provided the inspiration

This is National Park Week and even if you are unable to visit any of our national parks, there are a bunch of free goodies you can use to immerse yourself in the beauty of these truly natural treasures that we all own.

As you know, the whole idea behind a national month, week or day is not only to think about that entity during that period, but to raise awareness that will hopefully last over time (or until at least the next anniversary).

National Park Week is no different. But this year, there is a special emphasis on our national parks for two major reasons. First, the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service is coming next year. That's huge. You know why? Because America was the FIRST country to actually designate a national park.

Amazing isn't it? You have old world Europe and ancient Asia yet it was the
