Want to know why aluminum outdoor bleachers need to be heavy duty and high quality? Consider the "Bleacher Creatures" who inhabit the left corner of Yankee Stadium or bleacher "bums" for any team. These are tough crowds.

Now that Major League Baseball season 2015 has officially started those fanatical fans in the bleacher section will be at it again.

That's usually the group that is the loudest, the most dedicated and the weirdest dressed. That's where you will find the craziest costumes and the cleverest signs. Every team has them. It's not just baseball. Football certainly has its share. How about the Cleveland Brown's Dawg Pound? Green Bay Packers Cheeseheads? Dolfans in Florida? Ever see the "Black Hole" where the rowdiest members of Raider Nation in Oakland hang out? Some of those scary characters could be right out of a Mad Max movie.

And almost always, they sit in the section where the aluminum outdoors bleachers are located. These are usually the cheapest seats in the house. That means they are also generally the furthest from home plate or the 50-yard line.

But what they lack in location, they sure make up in rowdiness.

In fact, one of the favorite chants of the Bleacher Creatures is not against the opposing players, but against those who occupy the better seats. It goes something like this: "Box seats s#%*!"

How loud are they? Well, consider this. The Bleacher Creatures are usually led by a person with a cowbell. In some stadiums, it might be a drum. Or a horn. Whatever device makes the most noise.

How rowdy do they get? At one point, the Yankees organization banned the sale of alcohol just in that area. Didn't matter. There are great stories about how the fans found ways to sneak alcohol into the stands, such as hiding beer cans in sub sandwiches.

Hijinks from the outdoor bleachers

Here are some of the antics surrounding the Bleacher Creatures over the years:

- Roll Call - at the start of every game, the Creatures have a tradition of calling out the names of the starting players, beginning with the center fielder and then the rest of the players, except pitcher and catcher (who are preoccupied).

- If the police have to intervene during the game to stop one outrageous antic or another, the group shouts "No fun allowed!"

- Once they learned how to chant in Japanese so they could curse at former Seattle Mariner's Ichiro Suzuki (who ironically later became a Yankee).

- During breaks, such as between the 6th and 7th inning, the Creatures like to point out a fan from the opposing team and send him or her a continual barrage of insults.

- Since they are closest to right field, the right fielder from the opposing team always enjoys the luxury of being heckled the most from the Creatures throughout the game.

Seriously, though, no matter the venue, from Yankee Stadium to the local ball field, some fans are more active than others.

For that reason, it's important to have aluminum outdoor bleachers that are sturdily-built. First of all, they should be IBC Compliant (International Building Code).  Secondly, the guardrails, stairs, planks, footboards, risers and fittings should all be in alignment. Welds should be smooth. Shoddy, misaligned craftsmanship will cause bumps and gaps. Make sure non-slip rubber nosing is properly installed in key areas. Combine any bleacher deficiencies with a raucous bunch of fans and it creates a formula for trouble.

Sure, these groups can be obnoxious, maybe even borderline annoying. But they are also fun to watch and can generate excitement for a team. They are usually the first ones to stand up and yell during critical moments in a game and always try to motivate other fans when the team needs a boost.

This type of fan isn't necessarily a New Yorker or from a big city. When you have a winning team or a close game, even the mellowest people can turn into a crowd of crazed high-fivers, cheering and jumping up and down on an aluminum bleacher. The structure could be 3 row bleachers with a dozen fans or 15 row bleachers with a hundred fans.

Spectators like the Bleacher Creatures are a inevitable part of any sporting event. The best strategy is to be prepared for them. And one of the best ways to be prepared for them is to be sure you buy quality, sturdy aluminum outdoor bleachers from a trustworthy company. Because when the fans get excited, as a facility manager, you want to have full confidence in the platform where all this animated activity is taking place.
