double diecker bike rack A double-decker bike rack at the Beau View Condominium building in Biloxi, MS provides plenty of space to keep bikes stacked orderly and secure

A double-decker bike rack in a bike storage room is becoming a more popular choice as building managers realize providing secure bicycle parking can be a great amenity to promote.

Take the Beau View Condos in Biloxi, MS, for example.

This beautiful 112-unit luxury high-rise condominium is located on the Gulf of Mexico with access to sandy white beaches, incredible sunsets, family things to do and great shopping. (And of course, "Casino Row" is nearby).

What's also appealing about this residence along the gulf, is the ability to ride bicycles throughout the area. Park and forget the car. Hop on a bike and pedal along the beach and around town.

More and more Americans today own bicycles. There are an estimated 60 million people in the US who report they have ridden a bicycle in the past 12 months.

Bicycles are becoming an important part of people's lives. They enjoy the convenience of jumping on a bike. They certainly like the idea of not searching endlessly for a parking space or filling meters when they find one.

"My bike storage room isn't very big so the double-stacked racks was a better choice and fit for the spots," she said. "The design and quality are great. We love them."

In addition, they enjoy the physical workout they get from riding a bike. We all have heard of the cardio, strength, flexibility, stress, blood pressure and weight loss benefits of cycling. There are also the mental benefits as well.

Then there are the "green" benefits. Riding a bicycle around town means less congestion and less air pollution.

So, as we see, bicycles are an important part of people's lives.

That's why it's important to them that they have a secure and safe place to store their bicycles.

Double-decker bike rack for 10 bicycles fits neatly in limited space

The management at Beau View Condos recognized this and added two double-decker bike racks to their bike storage room.

Each double-decker bike rack holds 10 bicycles. These free-standing units feature deep wheel trays that keep the bikes steady and upright. This indexing of bicycles is important because it can keep a bunch of bicycles stored in an orderly fashion.

When you have a number of bicycles that need to be stored in a small space, you don't want a situation where bicycles are falling on top of each other and a person has to yank and separate their bicycle from the pile. This is not only annoying, but it can cause injuries as well.

Loading a bicycle onto these two-tier apartment bicycle racks is easy. Pick the front of the bike up and place the front wheel in the cutout. Then, pick up the rest of the bike from the back and let the weight rest on the front wheel.

Once the bicycle in up on the top tier, roll it forward so that the front wheel fits into the cutout. Same with the rear wheel. There are locking options if security is a concern (and with the prices of today's bicycles, it should be a concern).

The bike positions are staggered to avoid metal to metal and handlebar to handlebar conflict so the bicycles can be stacked close together. Spacing between bicycles is about 14 inches.

The major benefit of these specially-designed apartment bicycle racks is their high density. A 10-bike double-decker bike rack has a very small footprint - only 72 inches wide by 63 inches from front to back.

When floor space is limited, it's smart to head up toward the ceiling and literally double bike capacity.

And you certainly don't want to encourage bicycle riders to take their bikes up to their residences - scuffing up floors and walls along the way.

Nicole Tisdale, HOA manager for Beau View Condos is happy with her choice. The condominium had a limited space available for bike storage but the double-decker bike racks provided the perfect solution.

"My bike storage room isn't very big so the double-stacked racks was a better choice and fit for the spots," she said. "The design and quality are great. We love them."

And we're sure the residents love to see their bicycles locked on a neat and organized new double-decker bike rack as well!
