Fine dining and picnic tables? Not the first image that comes to mind.

But think about a time when you enjoyed a meal in a nice restaurant where the ambiance was outstanding.  Beautiful wallpaper. Interesting chandeliers. Striking tile floor.

Sort of makes the food taste better, doesn't it?

It certainly makes the overall dining experience more enjoyable.

But the reality is, you don't' need to spend $300 to enjoy a meal with great ambiance.

Not when Mother Nature is the Maître d'.

Because if you take the time to look, just about every great view has a picnic table somewhere in the vicinity.

Take this picnic table overlooking the Grand Canyon for example. You cannot beat that for wallpaper.

One of the biggest expenses people face when traveling is eating out. When you are on the road, you don't have access to a kitchen. Sightseeing can wear you out and most of the time you just want to sit down and eat at the nearest restaurant.

Why not grab a meal from a local deli and take it to a park? The meal will cost 80% less than a restaurant meal. And the ambiance. You certainly can't beat Planet Earth for atmosphere.

Find a spectacular spot in any national park and make it your dining room.

Even if you are still at home, you can enjoy the al fresco dining experience at a local park. Make a point to perhaps eat at a different park once a week.

Sitting at a picnic table under a shady tree overlooking an open meadow, or relaxing next to a pond can be a wonderful dining experience. Even better, most parks provide park grills, so you can enjoy a hot meal as well.

If you have a family, it is certainly easier on the wallet to trot them all out to a park than to feed them all in a restaurant.

Same with friends. Pack a basket of food, create a fancy setting on an outdoor picnic table and treat them to a meal in the open air.

Earth Day is April 22. Make a point to eat meals sitting at picnic tables in parks- that's fine dining at its earthiest.
