How College Sustainability Departments Lead In Strategies To Reduce, Recycle And Reuse Earth's Resources

The McHenry County College added a custom bike rack to their campus to promote bicycle commuting over car driving

There's a quiet movement taking place on college campuses across the US that will have a tremendous impact on changing attitudes in the future about our planet's resources.

That movement involves the creation of sustainability departments on nearly every college campus these past 10 years and their efforts to implement and promote best practices to reduce our impact on the Earth.

Sustainability, according to a definition created by the United Nations and adopted by many organizations is basically: "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs."

In other words, don't grab up resources today so there's nothing left for our children tomorrow.

Some of the ways that colleges accomplish this is by focusing on activities such as:

Constructing "green" buildings or retrofitting buildings to be LEED certified

Everyone is looking for a simple solution to reduce the accumulation of waste, and recycling receptacles might be the easiest answer.

Reducing landfills is becoming a growing challenge for cities across the United States, as garbage dumps grow and environmental concerns mount for residents and city planners alike.

Municipalities must act. Waste is heading for the local dump at a pace faster than analysts predicted.

As a case in point, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that 122 million tons of waste would be deposited in landfills in 2012. However, studies revealed that 262 million tons of trash wound up in landfills - an increase of 115% over the EPA estimate.

Clearly, waste control should be a major priority for city planners and concerned residents alike. Incorporating recycling receptacles into public spaces is a major way that cities

  9. Why You Need To Plan For New Aluminum Bleachers Before Your Old Condemned Bleachers Cause Major Headaches

Why You Need To Plan For New Aluminum Bleachers Before Your Old Condemned Bleachers Cause Major Headaches

Experts recommend that schools and other facilities have a plan to replace older bleachers with new and safer aluminum bleachers early before they become condemned or unusable

    By Gerald Dlubala

Managers may want to consider creating a plan to upgrade to new aluminum bleachers because condemned or otherwise unusable bleacher seating can have major implications for a school or facility. Those issues can go beyond just providing a place to sit for upcoming games.

That type of negative designation for your bleachers can reflect on the facility management as well. Patrons may question the commitment to their safety, and whether the rest of the facility or venue is being cared for and managed properly.

Planned events will be moved, or in a worst-case scenario, canceled altogether.

Parents will be angry. Ticket sales and concession revenues that were counted on are now gone. Teams that call the venue home are required to play their season's home games, including annual homecoming games, at other

  10. The Next Generation Solution For Parking All Those Bikes At Universities and Colleges

The Next Generation Solution For Parking All Those Bikes At Universities and Colleges

Bike parking rack designed for college campuses

When thousands of students bicycle on a college campus every day, as you can imagine, providing an adequate bike parking rack for each one can be a challenge.

The scale architects and planners face is just enormous. These are not a dozen bicyclists pedaling to classes. We're talking tens of thousands.

For example, at the University of California, Davis, there are approximately 20,000 bicycles on campus on any given day. (That's because the university and the town is probably the most bicycle-friendly place in America).

That's not an anomaly. When you think of the number of students enrolled at universities, the volume of cyclists is massive.

Colorado State University has 23,600 registered bicycles. More than 13,000 students bicycle on the Stanford University campus every day. The University of Minnesota installed 9,000 bicycle parking racks.

In fact, as we know, university planners want more students to ride their bicycles than drive because

Man Buys Disney Theme Park Bench To Celebrate Proposal To His Wife

A park bench is sometimes more than just a place to sit, but a place for couples to talk about starting a life together

A park bench has always been a popular place to sit and hang out, but for many couples, benches hold a special place in their relationship.

Take Ryan Macedo and his wife Carla. After meeting on a plane, the Seattle couple immediately hit it off and started to date. In fact, they each privately told their family "this could be the one."

Ryan didn't take long to make his move. But he wanted his proposal to be special.

He and his family were big Disney fans and he had many fond memories of vacations spent there.

So he thought, why not propose at The Magic Kingdom? His original plan was to propose at the Beast Library, but it was too crowded. (Sounds like he was better off).

Ryan decided he would make his pitch during the fireworks show later that night. But he didn't like the location where they were standing.

  15. Plastic Picnic Tables Are A Hot New Trend For Outdoor Furniture

Plastic Picnic Tables Are A Hot New Trend For Outdoor Furniture

Plastic picnic tables made with recycled planks are gaining in popularity due to their durability and easy maintenance

Plastic picnic tables are becoming more a part of the American landscape as managers begin to appreciate their attractive wood-like appearance, ruggedness and beneficial impact on the environment.

Recycled plastic picnic tables serve two purposes - one is to provide long-lasting, easy to clean and aesthetically pleasing site furniture for any outdoor location.

The second is to participate in the sustainability movement for planet Earth. That calls for reusing our resources, rather than depleting them.

According to Keep America Beautiful, by reusing materials we conserve the limited amount of raw materials available on the planet, reduce the ever-growing size of landfills, reduce pollution caused by the extraction of raw materials, save energy and create more jobs.

    It's a win-win for any location.

Plastic picnic tables offer durability and style

    Here's why:
