Custom Bike Racks, Such As This Shark Outdoor Bike Rack, Add PizzazzTo Any Town, School or Business

Custom bike rack in the shape of a shark outside the Haysville Activity Center

Have you ever considered the benefits of adding Custom Bike Racks with fins, tails, and teeth to your town, business or school?

That's what the City of Haysville in Kansas did recently when they installed a custom bike rack in the shape of a shark at their beautiful, new activity center.

At the center, built in 2017, the recreation department manages a giant-size pool for town residents.

Nearby, the rec department brings a bit of the beach to Kansas with two sand volleyball courts. They offer plenty of activities indoors as well from tiny tot basketball to family movie nights.

Georgie Carter, recreation director, said the shark-shaped custom bike rack has special significance.

"Shark week is always something the lifeguards have fun with during the summer," she said.

In addition, the youth swim team is called the "Piranhas" so there is a tie-in there as well.

See How Bike-Related Infrastructure Proposals Are Winning In The Voters Booth

Voters are agreeing to more proposals to add bike lanes and other alternative transportation infrastructures such as bike parking racks, pedestrian walkways and connected pathways

One of the true indications of serious support for improving bicycling infrastructure such as adding more protected bike lanes, connected paths to different areas and bike parking racks can be seen by the voter support in this past election.

When a proposition to fund bike infrastructure generates the required number of signatures and is placed on that ballot sheet, then you know there are citizens committed to making their communities better for bicycles.

Several propositions were on state and city ballots this past election day.

    Most passed.

That is quite an accomplishment because in many cases, people voted for increases in taxes or diversion of funds from one project to a bicycle and pedestrian project instead.

But that's the key. If communities are going to get serious about encouraging more bicycling and

  5. Bike Rooms Are A Neccesity For Cyclists And How To Make This A Selling Point At Apartment Or Office Buildings

Bike Rooms Are A Neccesity For Cyclists And How To Make This A Selling Point At Apartment Or Office Buildings

Bike rooms with vertical bike racks, bike lockers and bike repair stations

Bike rooms providing secure indoor storage are a great way to attract cyclists as future renters or employees.

(FYI: The expert planners at Park and Facilities Catalog offer free bike room layouts and diagrams to help maximize bike storage).

That's why the number of indoor bike storage areas are trending up and are becoming more and more prevalent around the US.

There are several reasons for this.

First of all, people invest some serious time and money in bicycles today. The days of the clunky old boneshakers are over.

Today bicyclists are riding bikes made with aerodynamic lightweight carbon frames, disc brakes, automatic shifting systems and all sorts of high-tech gadgetry.

It's not uncommon for someone to plunk down from $500 to $1,500 and thousands more for a bicycle.

As you can imagine, someone with an $11,000 Pinarello Dogma bike does not want to leave their precious possession out in the elements for several

Bike Repair Stations At University Promote Bike Commuting And Help To Keep Cyclists Safe

Bike repair stations are being added to more colleges, such as Oakland University in Michigan, to encourage students to ride rather than drive. The stations help with minor adjustments and repairs to keep bicycles safe and in good working condition

Bike Repair Stations are a simple yet very effective convenience you can add to a location if you want to promote bicycle commuting instead of driving.

These bike tune-up stations send a strong message that your college, apartment building, office or store or even entire town caters to cyclists.

This is one strategy used by Oakland, University in Rochester, Michigan. The school enrolls 20,012 students and as you can imagine, that would be a large amount of vehicular traffic to accommodate if they all drove to class.

----- "We decided on putting these Bike Repair Stations on campus to encourage bike use across campus as well as provide extra spots for our bike loan users to do small fixes on the bike they have checked out," said Bill Singleton,

    Attracts bicyclists.

Makes bike parking downtown more effective and stops people from locking their bikes to signs, railings or trees.

    Of course.

There is a big trend taking place across this country where some municipalities and businesses are deciding they want to install outdoor bike racks with a little pizzazz.

In Columbus, GA, the Parks and Recreation Department added a very unique "coil" outdoor bike rack.

"We thought it was cool and a fun design that allowed us to have a nice functional bike rack but not the same old traditional look and feel," said Holli Browder, Parks and Recreation Department Director, "We like the new bike rack very much and have had nice comments by citizens who

How A Double-Decker Bike Rack Adds More Bicycles In Small, Storage Areas For Condos And Apartment Buildings

A double-decker bike rack at the Beau View Condominium building in Biloxi, MS provides plenty of space to keep bikes stacked orderly and secure

A double-decker bike rack in a bike storage room is becoming a more popular choice as building managers realize providing secure bicycle parking can be a great amenity to promote.

Take the Beau View Condos in Biloxi, MS, for example.

This beautiful 112-unit luxury high-rise condominium is located on the Gulf of Mexico with access to sandy white beaches, incredible sunsets, family things to do and great shopping. (And of course, "Casino Row" is nearby).

What's also appealing about this residence along the gulf, is the ability to ride bicycles throughout the area. Park and forget the car. Hop on a bike and pedal along the beach and around town.

More and more Americans today own bicycles. There are an estimated 60 million people in the US who report they have ridden a bicycle in the past 12 months.

Bicycles are becoming an important part of people's

Mike Basehart, a member of the Colville Rotary in Washington State, stands with the handy Bike Repair Station the Rotary Club installed at the local library

A Bike Repair Station can literally provide the tools a community or club might need to promote bicycling in their town.

It's the old adage, "Build it and they will come."

In the case of cycling, build a bicycle infrastructure and cyclists will use it. And local residents will tend to consider using their bikes to get around town instead of their cars.

That's why the Rotary Club of Colville, WA, decided to not only add outdoor bike racks to the local library, but they went one step further and installed a Bike Repair Station as well.

"I think the repair stand is great," said Lynn O'Connor, District 5080 secretary. "The library folks said people really use it."

Of course, they do. A Bike Repair Station offers so many items to keep bicycles tuned up and every cyclist is bound to find some tool they love and need.

  10. Vertical Bike Rack On Sidewalk Provides Parking For Cyclists With Space For Pedestrians

Vertical Bike Rack On Sidewalk Provides Parking For Cyclists With Space For Pedestrians

Here's a novel use of a vertical bike rack.

The Boathouse Cantina Restaurant in Salida, CO needed a bike rack to accommodate their bicycling customers in this mountain town.

Towns like Salida are perfect for bicyclists because most people live near the downtown and it is more fun and healthy to take a bike than a car.

The restaurant asked SIX LINE Metalworks for help with their bicycle parking.

SIX LINE Metalworks came up with the brilliant idea to create a Vertical Bike Rack that they could install on the sidewalk in front of the building, and still leave plenty of room for people to walk by.

They installed the bike rack in a "loading only" parking area ideally located in front of the popular eatery.

"This bike rack is located on a heavily trafficked sidewalk and our clients wanted to maintain as much space in front of the main entrance to the restaurant as possible," said Candice Schuller, Six Line's designer. She has a degree in interior design and an art background with more than 10-years

Vertical Bicycle Racks Gain In Popularity As A Space-Saving Approach To Secure Bike Storage

Vertical bicycle racks wall mounted at Ten Penn Center in Philadelphia

Vertical bicycle racks have become a more popular addition to buildings across the country as people prefer to bike to work and want extra protection for their expensive bicycles.

Take Ten Penn Center on Market Street in Philadelphia.

Penn Center is a prestigious retail and office complex in the heart of Philadelphia's business district. The buildings between 15th and 19th street provide nearly five million square feet in office and retail space.

At Ten Penn Center, General Manager Henry Glover recently had vertical bicycle racks from the Park and Facilities Catalog installed in a designated bike room.

The space was long and narrow, but Glover said by adding the DoubleUp Bike Racks, they were able to make more space for four to five more bikes. Now there is room for a total of 20 bicycles. On a day when the weather is good, there will be from 10 to 12 bike commuters who use the room.

"The design is clean and very

Commercial Bike Racks Are Manufactured In Two Classes And With One Major Purpose: How To Deter Bicycle Bandits

Commercial bike racks are becoming a more important part of the landscape as the number of bike commuters has increased 46% nationwide from 2005 to 2013 and more than 100% in several major cities

Commercial bike racks vary in shape and size but are basically designed for two types of classes - long-term and short-term parking. Both of those classes involve bicycle security.

It's important to know how your location applies to those bicycle parking classifications.

But here's probably the most important factor to consider - bike thefts.

Bicycle thefts are on the rise across the country. The FBI says more than 200,000 bike thefts were reported in 2014.

That's reported thefts. Experts say there are a huge number of unreported thefts. The real number is probably more than 1 million bicycles stolen every year.

Street crime has increased in most major American cities, especially with the opioid crisis. Combine this with the fact that people now buy more expensive bicycles, many in the $300 to

Bike Rooms Like The One At Mississippi State University Create Attractive Spaces To Promote Bicycle Parking Racks On Campus

Bike rooms, like this one at Mississippi State University, are a great strategy to encourage more bicycling than driving on campus

There are ordinary bike rooms and then there are outstanding, spacious bike rooms.

You'll find the latter in the Old Main Academic Center on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS.

The Park and Facilities Catalog recently supplied 24 "Horseshoe" metal bicycle parking racks to an indoor bike room designed by Belinda Stewart Architects.

The entire space promotes "cycling." On a large wall in the back of the bike room, there is a huge mural of yellow bike art with the words "Bicycle Parking" painted above them in large letters.

The horseshoe racks are neatly installed in seven rows, spaced wide apart to provide plenty of room for bicyclists to park their bikes.

What's great about the horseshoe rack is that the metal tube is 35 inches high. This makes it easy for a cyclist to lock their bicycle and gives them an effective way to use three
